The Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge is the first highway-railway bridge that was built over the spectacular Yangtze River. This spectacular structure is a famous tourist destination due to its sheer size and the spectacular view of the Yangtze River and the city beyond that you are treated to when travelling across it.
Reason for the bridge’s construction
For thousands of years, the three towns of Wuhan – Hanyang, Hankou, and Wuchang – were separated by the Yangtze River. With no way of crossing it other than through boats, this proved to be a great obstacle for the locals. It also affected transportation between the north and south China.
Building the Bridge
The project to construct the first bridge over the Yangtze River began in 1955 and took about two years to complete. The bridge has not only improved transportation upon its completion but also helped in enhancing the communication between the north and south sides of the region.
A Sense of Scale
The completed bridge is 1,670.4 meters long and contains a four-lane highway. The bridge consists of 8 abutments and 9 arches in total. All in all, the structure is massive and is mesmerising to see up-close.
The View
The view from the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge is spectacular and is best enjoyed on foot. Imagine this, you are surrounded by rolling water in all directions. As the sound of the flowing Yangtze River envelops you, you are treated to the spectacular view of the city skyline beyond. If you’re staying at one of the nearby Wuhan hotels – say, for example, the Somerset Wusheng Wuhan – don’t miss out on this gorgeous sight.
