Amongst the best places to explore for nature lovers in Malaysia, Penang Hill offers much to discover and here’s a glimpse of what you can expect.
Getting There
To make your way up this site, take the Penang Hill Funicular Train from the Lower Station at the foot of the hill; it’s easy to reach for those finding Gurney Drive accommodation in George Town including properties such as Ascott Gurney Penang. The journey to the top takes around five to ten minutes and offers sublime views. Adventurers can consider an alternative one-hour hike to the top too!
The Habitat Penang Hill
Amongst the key attractions here is The Habitat Penang Hill where you can ‘lose’ yourself amidst nature and an ancient rainforest that is around 130 million years old! There are various trails for you to explore, while the Curtis Crest Tree Top Walk and Langur Way Canopy Walk amidst the treetops and breathtaking panoramas are not to be missed; to add to the fun, there’s zip-lining on offer as well.
Historical Buildings
Peninsular Malaysia’s first colonial hill station, Penang Hill has a rich history too, including being a haven for the British during colonial rule. As you explore this area, you will come across several historical bungalows and monuments that date to the 1800s featuring a mix of Asian, British colonial and contemporary design styles.
Other Highlights
Rising to a height of around 833 metres, Penang Hill offers the ideal vantage point to catch spellbinding sunrises and sunsets; the night-time views are stunning too. On your wanderings, you also have a chance to see various wildlife including monkeys and birds; other highlights include the Monkey Cup Garden and the Penang Hill Food Centre’s observation deck where couples can fasten a ‘love lock’ (you can bring your own or buy one here) on a fence overlooking George Town!
