It is a blessing to have a large open space like Galle Face Green, rich in greenery and free from extensive human interference in the midst of a busy city like Colombo. You can take the advantage of it by letting yourself get closer to nature for a while.
History
Galle Face Green originally came into existence when the Dutch colonials built it to accommodate a line-up of their cannons against the Portuguese. The canons play a decorative role these days. During the 1820s, when Sir Edward Barnes was the British Governor in charge, horse races were held in the area.

Fly a kite
If you happen to pass Galle Face Green, you are sure to see kites of all shapes and sizes fill the sky. You can buy one for yourself from a local vendor selling kites or if you are good at getting friendly with people, you can even join some locals doing the activity. This is not going to be hard, as Sri Lankans are known to be very friendly and generous people with a welcoming attitude towards foreigners.
Best time to visit
Today, Galle Face Green has put all this behind and has evolved into a favourite place for Colombo’s population to while away an evening of sea breeze, impromptu games, kite-flying and spicy delectable street food. If you’re spending a few days in this city where a wide range of apartments such as Cinnamon Life Colombo are available, visit the Galle Face Green on an evening just before dusk falls. Cinnamon Life Colombo is one of the upcoming luxury apartments in Colombo.
Have a picnic
This is one of the few public places in Sri Lanka that you can have a picnic without any restrictions. You can either pack your own picnic basket or buy your food from the local vendors. Galle Face Green is famous for its variety of street food like prawn vadai, naan rotti, and hoppers.
