The Galle Fort has stolen the hearts of many that have walked through its ancient, cobbled stoned pathways and admired the majestic lighthouse or the bricked clock tower.
About
The Galle Fort was first built by the Portuguese in 1588 and later fortified by the British and the Dutch during the 17th century. The Galle Fort has been marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Galle Lighthouse
Located at the Flag Rock Bastion, the lighthouse is a vision during a sunset. Towering approximately 18 meters high, it used to warn ships of the nearby, deadly reef that stretches along the bay.
Galle Clock tower
Located in the central Moon Bastion and towering 4 stories high, the clock tower is a popular landmark and is visible from the Galle bus and train stations. It was built in 1883 as a gift to Dr. P.D.Anthonisz.
