The construction of the He Xiangning Art Gallery was initiated in 1995 and completed in 1997. Apart from the National Art Gallery of China this is the only other main gallery that showcases modern art of the Chinese culture. This gallery’s main focus is collecting and studying the works of the famous Chinese painter He Xiangning.
Xiangning was born in Hong Kong and studied art in Tokyo at the Ueno School of Art. She was passionate about politics as well as painting. She also used this form of art to convey various messages and political views to the rest of the world. Plum blossoms, pine trees, tigers, lions and landscapes are some of the main features used by her to depict significant qualities as well as the various provocative aspirations she had. Once she returned to China she was influenced by the Lingnan School of Painters and her style as well as symbolism was replaced by those of modern Chinese culture.
