The Independence Square located in Colombo was built in commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule. The design is based on the “Magul Maduwa” the celebration hall of the Kandyan Kingdom, the last native kingdom of Sri Lanka. At the head of the monument will you find a statue of the first prime minister of Sri Lanka, regarded as the father of the nation, Hon. Don Stephen Senanayake. There are several artistic details involved in the pillars and the stone lions around the monument. The area around the square has today been converted into a public recreational facility where people gather around in the evenings to enjoy a walk or engage in other fitness activities while kids play around on the grass.
