Hikkaduwa is located down south on the coast of this part of the island and is famous for its clear waters and of course the coral reefs here. The beach is a favourite among both locals and tourists who want to explore the reefs.
Best time to visit the reefs
Although Sri Lanka is an all-year-round destination, the waters may not always be as clear every day to be able to explore the reefs. The best time to visit would be between April and November when the weather is warm, and the visibility is great.
Types of coral
Hikkaduwa reef boasts over 60 species of coral. This includes mostly hard coral like brain, staghorn, elkhorn and table. There are a few encrusting organisms as well like marine sponges and tunicates. The reef spreads across 102 hectares.
Ways to explore
If you are staying at a Hikkaduwa resort, you can easily find opportunities for diving and snorkelling. Some hotels like Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon even offer rides on a glass-bottom boat.
Things to remember
Ensnaring marine creatures of any sort is not encouraged here. Also, walking on the coral is not allowed, even if the coral seems dry and as hard as limestone, they are still living organisms.
