Located on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, Otaru is the ideal place to enjoy laidback adventures; here are some of its key attractions that will make your trip truly memorable.
Otaru Canal
Dating to the early 1920s, this attraction is located a short drive from Grand Park Otaru. You can look forward to a relaxed stroll beside the waterway which is also bordered by warehouses home to cafes, museums and pubs; the area is lit up at night which adds to its charm, while canal cruises are offered too.
Sakaimachi Street
Also worth exploring is Sakaimachi Street, known for its preserved Western-style buildings that date back to when this was a bustling port in Otaru. Accommodation at the marina offers easy access to this locale where you will find glass workshops, souvenir shops and sites like the Museum of Venetian Art and Music Box Museum.
Otaru Sankaku Ichiba
For some local culture, amongst the best spots to visit is the historical Sankaku Ichiba or Triangle Market. Open daily, it features plenty of fresh seafood including mackerel, crab and salmon as well as veggies and fruits; best of all, there are several restaurants here where you can savour delicious seafood delights.
Amazing Night Views
Once the sun sets, you can visit key viewing points for spellbinding night views of Otaru. Amongst the most popular is Mount Tengu which can be reached via a ropeway and provides what is billed as one of the three best night views in Hokkaido. More amazing vistas also await at the Asahi and Kenashiyama observation decks.
