Situated in the Surat Thani Province, Thailand, Khao Sok National Park is an important part of Thailand’s history and is a popular tourist destination.
Formed millions of years ago the Khao Sok Land area was once a delta which succumbed to the changes wrought by the changing temperatures and the shift in the Indian tectonic plate. Evidence found today suggests that the area was once a giant coral reef rivaling the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. As Khao Sok was not affected by the ice age the natural rain forest which makes part of the Park found today is older than the Amazonian Forest. Because of the shifting geological movement the limestone was forced upwards and has resulted in the tall columns of limestone that shoot up out of the ground in various places in the Park today.
The sanctuary is home to a number of wild animals including the Asian elephant, Sambar Deer, Malayan Tapir, Tiger, Serow, Bear, Banteng, Pig Tailed Macaque, Gibbon, Langur, Wild Boar, and many more. The giant flower that grows in the park Bua Phut is by itself a great crowd puller. Apart from this the Park is also rich in flora and fauna and is home to a number of breathtaking waterfalls. The reservoir with the Ratchaprapha dam in the middle of the sanctuary produces electricity for a great part of southern Thailand.
Visitors to the Park can choose from a wide variety of options and may choose a foot trek, elephant trek, canoeing trip, safari etc, each of which brings with it its own unique experience.
The Cheow Larn Lake area within the park houses luxury tents and floating raft houses in which you can choose to camp out for a while.
Khao Sok is the ideal place to visit to shed away the stress and fatigue of city life and to take some time to attune to nature and breathe in some peace and tranquility in a beautiful surrounding. For your extended holiday in Thailand if you wish to visit the Park then looking for a Phuket resort will be ideal. From the many accommodation options available Phuket villas are a popular option and the traveller would do well to book into one such as Anantara Phuket Resort Thailand.
