Bangkok is renowned for its floating markets, and the Khlon Lat Mayom is among the most famous of the bunch. This traditional marketplace has everything you need, from fabrics to snacks, and is well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Founding the Market
The Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market was first opened in November 2004. An area of 30 acres was set aside for the market with the hope that it would grow into a communal hotspot. According to the founder, no rent fees would be collected from the market’s vendors as ‘the floating market belongs to everyone.’
What to Buy
While the floating market sells all kinds of goods, fresh produce and delicious dishes are among the best things you can shop for here. Now, you might be inclined to head to one of the best restaurants in Bangkok for lunch – perhaps at the Chatrium Hotels & Residences. Or, you can have a rustic dish right here in Khlon Lat Mayom. Highlights include the Thai crusted grilled fish and rice flour crepes served with egg yolk.
Things to Do
aside from all the shopping, there’s actually an assortment of fun activities to try out while you’re here at the market. These include boat ride tour along the river, a fish feeding session and even a bit of exciting horseback riding.
A Few Tips
Here are a few things to keep in mind when visiting the market in order to get the best possible experience. Firstly, try to arrive in the morning right after opening time – the place tends to get crowded as lunch approaches. You should also take time to visit the village and the local houses before things get too busy. Finally, keep in mind that there are several other great floating markets in the vicinity, so be sure to check those out as well!
