The Lin Fung Temple is dedicated to the goddess of mercy, Kun Iam. And a symbolic representation of this goddess stands high on an altar which is adorned with meticulous carvings and captions. This temple is also known as the Temple of Lotus and it features various other sites which boast the rich architectural heritage of China and Macao. The building of its original structure was initiated in 1592 and since then the Lin Fung has been restored regularly over the years. The structure that we see today is the 1876 version.
The main attraction which catches your eye as you enter this temple is the exquisite façade with interesting carvings. The carvings have been done using clay in bas-relief methods used in China during the 19th century. Mythological and historical figures depicting the religious traditions as well as the history of Buddhism in Macao as well as China, adorn this façade. The clay carvings are complemented by the two impressive lions carved in stone that serve as sentinels at the entrance of the place of worship.
The most visited site inside the complex is the statue of Tin Hau, which is inside the main hall. Further there are other statues acting as generals to protect the Tin Hau. There is also a very interesting courtyard with a lotus pond and fighting dragons. The shrine of Kwan Tai is also an interesting attraction at the temple premises.
The Lin Fung Temple in Macau has also for many years served as a lodging option for the Chinese and Mandarin government officials visiting Macau. And it was these same premises which served as the meeting point where the end of the opium trade in China was declared over. And the rear of the temple houses a garden built in memory of Lin Zexu, who is considered the hero of the Opium War.
