The structure of the Art Centre was inspired by the Lotus Pond, which is part of the ruins of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. Being a referent to the past the centre touches on memories of Sri Lanka’s rich history in the Arts. The government of Sri Lanka, at the time of its construction sponsored the project, in the hope that it would enliven tourism and a dying interest in the Arts. Translating into “NelumPokuna” in Sinhalese, locals often refer to it in similar terms. If you hope to make the journey to the centre alone, directions would be more easily provided if referred to as simply “Nelum Pokuna”.
The stage is of stupendous proportions. Your production will also light up in unimaginable ways as the stage has 500 lighting units. Moreover, the stage has an elevator of three units that can move independently or as a whole. If your production includes an orchestra, you would not be surprised that the stage has an elevator for the orchestra.
Providing a change in atmosphere, the Open Air Theatre will be the ideal space for unconventional performances. It is astoundingly spacious with a seating arrangements made along aisles. Despite the heat and humidity characteristic of the tropics, this space is more than welcoming.
The rehearsal room, dressing rooms and parking spaces are equally well structured. The Lotus is certainly in full bloom!
