Shanghai, located on the Yangtze River Delta, is one of the largest and most populous cities in the world. Known for offering visitors a fusion of traditional oriental architecture and modern lifestyles, Shanghai is a great tourist attraction. It is also home many luxury hotels and serviced residencies such as the Ascott Huai Road Shanghai; which offers a range of tranquil apartments near Shanghai Times Square.
Shanghai is home to many historic landmarks such as the Yu Garden and the City God Temple. One of its most historic landmarks in terms of theater and drama is the Lyceum Theatre. Built in the 1930’s the Lyceum Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Shanghai. The theatre has a rich history and is one of the few landmarks in Shanghai that still boast traditional western architecture. Even today the Lyceum Theatre hosts many productions, dramas and musicals, making it a popular attraction to those that are fans of the arts and culture.
Located on Maoming Lu Road in the Huangpu District, the Lyceum Theatre was established in the 1930’s to cultivate theatre productions. Throughout its 80 year history the theatre has served as the headquarters of the British Amateur Drama Club, and even had its name changed to the Shanghai Art Theatre. However, in 1992 the Lyceum Theatre was given its original name and was thereafter refurbished, resulting in the theatre being given a fresh look. But much of the original western architecture is still intact. Thus, visitors will be able to marvel the beautiful stage with features of its original 18th Century European style, and the glorious Roman architectural styles of the auditorium and foyers. These features give visitors the feeling of walking into a traditional theatre, just as they existed in the peak of theatre. With a seating capacity of 680, the Lyceum Theatre hosts many major productions and performances. Although Chinese productions are more regularly hosted, English productions are also hosted from time to time as well.
