Moon plains also known as ‘Sandatanne’ or ‘Sandagalatanne’, the newest attraction of Nuwera Eliya, Sri Lanka was opened to the public on the 25th March 2014. It is scenic landscape with a spectacular view. The striking attraction of the area is the mini world’s end at the edge with a remarkable 360-degree view of the surrounding mountain ranges such as Piduruthalagala, Haggala Mountain, Great western mountain, Kirigalpoththa mountain, Namunukula mountain, the Single tree mountain, Konical hill mountain and the Kikiligayagama mountain.
Moon plains is located slightly outside Nuwera Eliya, pass the Government Potato Seed Farm at Sita Eliya. However, it is only a 30-minute drive away from the city thus is within the easy reach from any of the Nuwara Eliya Bungalows, hotels and guesthouses such as Scottish Planter.
The plains are now classified by the Municipal council of Nuwera Eliya as an Agricultural and Environmental Tourism Zone. The grounds are open to the public from 7am to 5pm on all seven days of the week and could be accessed with a ticket priced at Rs. 50 per person, it will be Rs. 250 if you are a foreigner. The entrance to moon plains is from the Seetha Eliya farm. Exploration of the plains from there is usually carried out in jeep safaris. Jeeps will be available for hire in the farm premises.
The land extent before the mini world’s end viewing area is about 3km long and could be spent sight-seeing the picturesque landscapes, unique ecosystem and the glorious biodiversity. The plains are covered by gorgeous lush green and is house to a variety of vibrant bird species and exotic wildlife such as elks, dears, and wild buffalos. The grounds are sometimes grazed by leopards. The magnificent view of sunset or sunrise through the rustic setting of the plains is truly a memory to be cherished.
