Ko Phi Phi a six islands archipelago south east of Phuket is thought to be among the most naturally beautiful places in the world. A part of the Mu Ko Phi Phi – Nopparathara National Park, it is known for an abundance of corals supporting a diversity of marine life and landscapes of fantastically shaped limestone formations rising out of the blue water the site of caves and sandy beaches. Only Phi Phi Don the largest island of the lot is inhabited. The other islands remain undeveloped protected by their national park status and can only be visited.
The eco system in and around the islands include tropical rainforests, limestone forests on the thin layers of soil atop the limestone formations, mangrove forests in the brackish water of low lying areas and coral reef eco systems.
The national park is the only place in Thailand frequented by frigate birds. Other sea birds that make their appearances here include the black naped tern, white bellied sea eagle and bridled tern while sightings of petrels, sheawaters and tropic birds have also been reported. Land based birds that have been sighted include the pied imperial pigeon, black neck swiftlet and the Nicobar pigeon.
Well documented marine species that call the waters of park home is the common Malayan dolphin, black finless dolphin, white dolphin, rough toothed dolphin and the porpoise. Snorkelers and divers come across the other denizens of the underwater world in the park; sharks, Moray eels, mullet, rays and marlin.
Other than the flora and fauna the islands are famous for their shallow and calm blue water lapping at stunning white beaches among which is Ao Nang Beach at the foot of a steep limestone cliff. Tham Phra Nang cave, a freshwater shell fossil platform 20 to 40 million years old, one of three such sites in the world, Viking Cave a huge vaulted cave on the walls of which are ancient paintings of what appear to be Chinese junks, 300 meter high limestone formations on Phi Phi Lee along with beautiful secluded sandy beaches and coral reefs in deep bays are some of the attractions that day trippers from the mainland and larger islands come to see. The best time to visit the island is during the cooler months between November and April.
