Among the 50 districts in Bangkok, Dusit District is popular for concentrating scores of important landmarks besides a number of tourist attractions. The famous Dusit Zoo in Bangkok is sited in this area and considered as the oldest zoological park in Thailand. In the vicinity are other attractions like the Royal Plaza, a royal temple and the National Library.
Right behind the Royal Plaza you will discover a magnificent Italian edifice by the name Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall. It is the old Parliament House of Bangkok. With time this edifice was not sufficient to hold the expanding parliament, so it was moved to a new location. Presently the new parliament is sited near and north of the old parliament.
An embodiment of the cream of Italian architecture is what Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall is all about. This imposing edifice is topped with a great dome and its courtyard is wrapped in lush green turfs and well trimmed hedges. There is also an attractive wrought iron fence encircling the premises.
This outstanding Italian structure was designed and built by Italian architects and artisans under the command of King Rama V, also known as King Chulalongkorn. This magnificent building spans over an acre of land and is furnished with plush carpets, a grand foyer, lofty dome and striking murals. These murals are portraits of the earliest kings of the Chakri Dynasty, from Rama I to Rama VI.
Thai parliament is referred as The National Assembly of Thailand and boasts of two legislative bodies, in other words a bicameral legislature. The Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall was used by this legislature since June 1932 as their Parliament House. The new Parliament House commenced its work since September 1974, while the Throne Hall became a popular historical attraction in Bangkok. The current Parliament House nestles chambers for the National Assembly to meet in addition to housing important offices, a press room and a library among others.
