Those looking for a unique marine experience in Sri Lanka must surely pay a visit to the East coast! Here’s some more information on Pigeon Island.
Overview
Named after the Blue Rock Pigeon that breed there, Pigeon island is one of the two marine national parks in Sri Lanka. Consisting of two small islands just a boat ride away from the coastline of Nilaveli, Trincomalee on the northeast coast, the islands are ideal for snorkelling and experiencing rich marine life. The sanctuary extends up to 471.4 hectares.
What you’ll see
When you visit the island, on one side you’ll see plenty of colourful tropical fish and on the other side, you’ll find marine turtles and blacktip reef sharks swimming below the dramatic rock formations. After you’re done snorkelling, explore the coral on the island and take in the panoramic sea views!
Getting there
The marine sanctuary is approximately 312 kilometres from Colombo and can be reached within 6 hours through the Puttalam – Anuradhapura – Trincomalee highway. If you’re looking to travel by car, it’s best to look up Sri Lanka car rental companies, the likes of Malkey Rent a Car so that you can get to your destination in a comfortable manner!
