The City of Makati in the Philippines is a sprawling metropolis that acts as the financial capital for the entire country. Makati contains the largest number of multinational and local companies of the country, which means that this bright city is adorned with lavish buildings that are a testament to the prestige of the companies that they represent. One that stands mightier than rest, both in size and the scope of businesses it contains, is the Rockwell Centre. Located in the heart of Makati, situated near grand locales such as the Berjaya Makati Hotel which is a popular Manila hotel, this site is definitely worth visiting when in the area.
The Rockwell Centre sits atop land that once used to contain a thermal power plant that was surprisingly closed down in 1995, to make way for the luxurious residential and business super-centre that will take its place. The thermal plant belonged to the Lopez famly, who are the owners of the infamous Meralco corporation, the main supplier of electricity to the Phillipines. The first to be built were the four residential towers, and upon completion in the mid 1990s, were named after four famous Phillipino artists. These towers are considered the pinnacle of luxury-living in the country. Next came the Rockwell Club in 1999, a social, recreational and sports club for the country’s elite. The iconic Power Plant Mall followed soon after in 2000, a four-level, upscale shopping mall that contains outlets of prestigious brands such as Rolex and J.Lindeberg. The company later donated a prime lot to a premiere law school.
Currently there are seven residential towers with another one, named the Lopez Tower, under construction, three office buildings, with one being the country headquarters for Nestle, the luxurious shopping mall, the Anteneo graduate school, and the elite recreational and sports club. The area where the Rockwell Centre is situated in screams exclusivity since the infrastructure contains no public transport, making the Rockwell Centre a locale that caters to the whim of the country’s most superior.
