Weligama is a sleepy fisher town located along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Home to stilt fishermen and a fabulous bay the place is the base for setting off on rewarding whale watching tours. Best of all it is only 142kms from Colombo; easily accessed via the southern highway. As for the snake farm; well that is a must for lovers of reptiles to come across some exotic tropical varieties.
The Snake Farm Location
The place is quite easy to find as it is just 14kms from the city centre of Weligama; where many of the best hotels in Weligama are found hugging the gorgeous expanse of sandy beach like We Escape. Travel along the Akuressa Road and you will see a sign indicating the farm.
Slithery Varieties on Display
The farm is home to 15 varieties of snakes; if you are a lover of reptiles and are accustomed to handling them or simply love a good thrill you could hold the creatures with extreme care and help of the centres caretaker. Amongst the varieties of reptiles is a huge python which of course is tipped to be quite friendly.
Stilt Fishermen
Travelling to the snake farm or even while enjoying a long walk along the beach of your Weligama resort; you are bound to come across the curious sight of stilt fishermen. These lone anglers are seen balancing precariously on a cross stick placed a few metres into the sea where breaking waves bring in a variety of small fish. Sitting on the stilts for endless hours to catch the fish these poverty stricken folk are shown much respect.
Weligama Beach
One cannot ‘not’ touch on the splendours of Weligama Beach. It is one of the country’s loveliest bay beaches offering you a chance to walk for many metres into the ocean under soft blue skies.
