Taprobane Island is located in Weligama, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The island is located around 200 metres from Weligama shore, and holds a white colonial villa that was used as a home to Count de Mauny- Talvande in the 1930s. If you’re staying at a villa in Sri Lanka, do keep in mind to make a visit to this island, as properties such as We Escape, will provide options for great excursions and attractions to see in and around the town.
Count de Mauny- Talvande spent his life on the island, which was believed to be around 30 years, entertaining and playing host to kings, aristocrats, governors, statements and many other important individuals. The island encompasses around 2 and half acres of lush gardens and breathtaking views. Taprobane is known to be the most exclusive and enchanting feature of the southern coastal town of Weligama.
Much of the island is covered by the lush and wonderful garden, which is big enough to wander and get lost in! The gardens and its towering trees proudly protect this old colonial mansion.
However, at present, this mansion has been converted to a modern accommodation option for those who wish to stay on the island. The most exciting part of this hotel is that visitors to the island would need to wade through the waters to reach it. Fortunately enough, the mansion also doubles as a historical museum, with many artefacts and remnants from the past still quite visible in most parts of the island. Letters and photos of this historical island and the mansion can be found displayed throughout the property. Although most of the structure was restored, it is quite easily noticeable that the mansion is still a true historical wonder.
