Located in Macau, China St. Domingo’s Church is one of the famous Spanish Dominican churches in China. This was constructed by the worshippers of St. Domingo & Lady Fatima in the 17th Century. This beautiful church was also declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
This remarkable church was established in the year 1587 by three Dominican priests. This impressive church building is of baroque architecture with slight touches of local Macanese features. The grand teak doors add more character to the church. The centrepiece of St. Domingo is a marvellous statue of Madonna and child.
St. Domingo possesses three halls and the ceiling inside the premises is beautifully decorated with baroque patterns. The statue of Virgin Mary is another significant feature of this wonderful building. Another highlight of St. Domingo is its sacristy that stores more than 300 pieces of religious artwork such as gold and silver utensils that are used for mass, exquisite religious paintings and many other valuables that belong to this church. One such artefact is the bronze bell that is supposed to be the oldest bell in Macau.
The place houses many more statues and the most famous among them is the statue of Jesus Christ. A visit to St. Domingo Church will show the Portuguese and Spanish influences of the premises. One of the main festivals conducted by this sacred shrine is the festival where the fellow devotees carry the statue of Lady Fatima (Virgin Mary) in the streets. It is an annual festival that begins every 13th of May.
In the year 1997 the St. Domingo’s Church was renovated and a museum was built. This museum is called the ‘Treasure of Sacred Art Museum’ and houses more than hundreds of relics and religious works.
