This bustling market has been here for 145 years. It is one of the biggest markets in the southern hemisphere selling the freshest produce, seasonal cheeses, seafood and baked goods. If you want to take a journey through Australia’s food and culture, paying a visit here is a must.
The market’s vision and mission
The market’s goal is to become the world’s largest food and produce market, and it is committed to doing so in a sustainable and profitable manner. It provides guests with a diversified and culturally interesting shopping experience that they would not find anywhere else in the city.
The History of Adelaide Central Market
It was founded in 1869 on Grote Street and was renamed the City Markets after Mayor Judah Solomon officially opened it in 1870. The original market was built out on a single length of land with merely a fence enclosing it, unlike the covered market we see now. The market was open on Tuesday and Saturday mornings at the time, with over 50 vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables.
The Market today
The Adelaide Central Market has evolved from 50 traders to over 250 stallholders today, making it an important element of South Australia’s gourmet scene. It is only a 10 min walk from some of the best hotels in Adelaide such as the luxurious Avani Adelaide Residences. You can head down here with your family for a nice evening.
The Traders at Adelaide Central Market
Con’s Fine Foods, Dough, Golden Daytime Cheesecakes, and the Smelly Cheese Shop have delicious treats made using the freshest ingredients you can find in the market itself. Kangaroo Island Stall sells wine from the island, you can buy it on the mainland without having to physically visit the place.
