A place where local Laos tradition meets modernity with a touch of English culture infused into this amazing combination was identified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Here’s a glimpse of what to expect if you plan on visiting this wonderful destination.
The legend of Luang Prabang
The location of this quiet little town is in the marvellous green mountains of Phou Thao and Phou Nang. The town is set up in the peninsula created by the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. Many legends belong to this paradise. One of the most popular folklore is that Buddha smiled as he rested here during his journey indicating that one day the small town of Luang Prabang might prosper with wealth and power.
Architecture and heritage
Incredibly this ancient land has managed to preserve its cultural designs of architecture mingled with a dash of English colonial architecture as well. Most of the buildings are constructed of wood while the places of worship are built with stone. There are several pagodas that are thought to be the most intricately decorated Vat in the whole of Southeast Asia!
Luang Prabang culture
The most significant feature of the culture here is that every activity that takes place here is in perfect synch with the natural environment! The Phousi Mountain that stands out in the very heart of the town is considered sacred as it is thought to be the realm of the fabled nagas. Certain rituals and ceremonies are conducted to mollify the nagas and other evil spirits that roam the area.
