The Trincomalee bay also known as Koddiyar Bay is a major tourist attraction of Sri Lanka as it forms one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Overlooked by two adjoining hills this is a picture perfect sight.
Location
It is located in the eastern province of Sri Lanka, along the north east coast of the island near the Trincomalee town. Surrounded by glorious waters and dotted with tiny islands, the bay looks like a tropical paradise; such views can be enjoyed whilst on air taxi tours in Sri Lanka to the east coast offered by domestic airlines such as Cinnamon Air.
Overview
The bay contains three differentiated portions. The main bay, located in the south and southeastern side forms a natural harbour in the coasts of the ocean. The China Bay and the Tambalagam Bay being the other two portions are not as deep as the main bay.
Features
The bay is 13km long and 10km wide and the mouth of the bay is 5km wide. There are a few islands dispersed around including the Elephant Island, Great Sober Island and little sober island situated in China Bay, round island and Clappenburg Island in the main bay.
History
The Trincomalee harbour was a property of the royal navy and was a naval base. In 1956 the harbour was taken over by the Sri Lankan government in order to develop as a commercial port.
