Located around 165km from the commercial capital Colombo, the Udawalawe National Park is a protected park known for being home to a large population of wild elephants. The park encompasses the Udawalawe Reservoir which attracts herds of elephant families in search of water. The perfect place for an elephant safari, Udawalawe offers great elephant sightings especially during the dry season, usually from May to September. There is more to the park than elephants however, and those on a safari may catch a glimpse of such wildlife as barking deer, water buffalo, grey langurs, jackals, a range of bird species and if you are lucky enough, Sri Lanka’s endemic leopard.
