The legendary Uluwatu Temple in Bali lies serenely on the edge of a steep cliff some 70 metres above the sea level. A visit to this magnificent temple will give you more than just beautiful sunset views of the ocean.
First off, where is it?
The temple is located in the hamlet of Pecatu in the Kuta sub district within the Badung Region. It takes about one to two hours to get there from some of the tourist destinations like Kuta and Ubud. So say you’re staying in an accommodation at a luxury wellness and spa retreat in Ubud the likes of COMO Shambhala Estate, Bali; you can take use of their tours to the temple that comes with English-speaking guides.
The Story Behind…
According to ancient scriptures, the Uluwatu Temple was founded by a Majapahit monk named Empu Kuturan during the 11th Century. This same monk is said to have established many other temples in Bali the likes of the 1,000-year-old Pura Sakenan in Denpasar. It says that a holy priest by the name of Dhang Hyang Dwijendra achieved highest spiritual point of oneness here. The Uluwatu Temple is dedicated to God Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in his manifestation as Rudra.
Furry Guards
The temple and the small forest that lies to the front of it, is infested with monkeys belonging to the Macaque species. The locals believe that these monkeys are here to guard the temple from any bad spirits and influences. They are known to be really cheeky at times and snatch belongings from visitors. Due to this, they have learned a remarkable bartering trick, by exchanging the stolen valuables for pieces of fruit! Quite ingenious but unfortunately it only makes them steal more, so be careful.
What’s There to See?
Some of the best attractions of the temple include the Brahmin statue that faces the Indian Ocean. This is said to be a depiction of Dhang Hyang Dwijendra. There are two stunning entrances to the temple consisting of split gates carved with intricate leaves and flowers designs. Other sculptures and monuments include a 10th century winged stone gate, a Brahma statue, and a sarcophagus.
