Colombo may be Sri Lanka’s bustling commercial capital, but amidst the towering buildings you will find a charming beachside space to unwind and enjoy street food too; welcome to Galle Face Green!
Getting There
This public urban park can be found in the Kollupitiya area of the city, nestled between the ocean and the main Galle Road. When deciding where to stay in Colombo, consider hotels near Galle Face which can be easily reached via public buses or tuk-tuks as well.
What to Expect
Especially popular in the evenings and at night, Galle Face Green is a favourite amongst families and couples. Around a 10 minute drive from Cinnamon Red Colombo, it’s a great place for kite flying, watching sunsets and having picnics. Remember, if you see two people huddled under an umbrella it’s normally a sign of a couple in need of some privacy!
By the Beach
Just below this area is a small slice of shore for those who want to get their feet wet in the ocean. Parallel to it is a promenade with benches as well as vendors selling street food, while there’s also a small boardwalk which provides some ideal views of the oncoming waves.
When Hunger Strikes
You get lots of vendors and food trucks in Galle Face Green offering plenty of food options be it the prawn-based “isso wade”, instant noodles, ice cream or a spicy raw fruit concoction known as “achcharu”. You can sample “kottu roti” at Nana’s, while the relatively new Breeze Barracuda offers more western dishes like pizza and pasta.
