The St Mary’s church Negombo is one of the oldest yet magnificent catholic landmarks in Sri Lanka. The expansive church is also one of the largest cathedrals in Sri Lanka.

The city and the church
Negombo is a city that was greatly influenced by Christian faith during the time it was occupied by the Portuguese was called as the little Rome because of the sheer volume of the churches in the town. The St Mary’s Church was built during the reign of the British. The construction commenced in 1874 and with some delay, it was fully completed and opened in 1922.
The Architecture
The church has been built in neoclassicism style with plain walls and columns. The ceilings of the church are ornately decorated with a painting of many saints and the walls at the upper level are fixed with statues of religious saints.
