What is a Star Fort?
Also known as bastions, these were a style of fortifications that became popular during times where canons ruled the battlefields. The outcroppings allowed archers and canon-operators to effectively defend the fortification without exposing themselves to danger.
History
The fort was built in 1765 and only saw a few battles. It was at one point taken over by Singhalese forces, with the Dutch recapturing the fort in 1763. Unfortunately the fort never got to truly prove its defensive capabilities.
Design and Capabilities
The fort is shaped like a star with six points, and has enough room for 12 canons. The outer wall is approximately 7.5 metres in width, and surrounded by a 6 metre wide moat that is 10 feet deep. The fort is relatively small, and was built to hold ammunition, food and a small garrison.
What to See
There’s a museum situated within the fort where one can learn about the history of Matara, and you can also explore the sleeping quarters and prison cells. If you’re staying at one of many a Ayurveda resort in Sri Lanka situated in Matara, such as Surya Lanka Ayurveda Beach Resort, the fort is worth checking out.
