Koh Phangan is one of the most beautiful tropical spots in Thailand. The area is known for the powdery soft sand, the beautiful beach, peaceful atmosphere and dense jungle. Amidst this picturesque setting is one of Thailand’s oldest Buddhist temples, the Wat Phu Khao Noi. The translation of Wat Phu Khao Noi means ‘temple of the small mountain’ and as its name suggests the temple is situated on a small mountain in Koh Phangan. The temple has been recognised as a place for viewing the surrounding islands, hills and the ocean. It is a quiet place that is a perfect place for people to relax after a whole day of sightseeing in Thailand. Thai streets and towns are busy and crowded with noise and Wat Phu Khao Noi provides a welcome diversion to it. At all times visitors are required to remain silent and most devotees and visitors to the temple strive to maintain that.
The temple was established by a group of around 1400 Buddhist monks. Even at present a large number of monks reside in the temple and carry out the daily activities. If you haven’t been exposed to practices of Buddhism then you can get an idea of it when you visit this particular temple. If you arrive before noon you can even meet some of the monks and ask them about the temple and even about Buddhist teachings. Usually after noon the monks dedicate their time to meditation or reading Buddhist scriptures so it’s best to approach them in the morning hours.
Since Wat Phu Khao Noi is a place of religious worship visitors should be respectful and remain silent when they visit. If you are travelling by car you should park outside and make sure that you are dressed appropriately. It is of course tempting to take pictures alongside the Buddha statues but it is seen as an insult to Thai culture if you do so. If you want to visit the temple you should prepare your stay in one of the Koh Phangan resorts. There are several Koh Phangan hotels which are located close to the temple and provide easy access.
