Built in the year 1380, during the reign of Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty, the Xian Drum Tower showcases a combination of different architectural styles and bears testimony of an ancient civilisation that reigned supreme for centuries. Records indicate that the Drum Tower was renovated twice during the reign of the Qing Dynasty in 1699 and 1740.
This 34 metre high 52.6 metre long post is a two storied panelled structure that bears architectural features of both the Tang and Qing Dynasty. Not a single iron nail is used to hold this structure together; hence it indeed is an architectural marvel that demonstrates the skills and ability of the ancient monarchs and their people.
An arched doorway provides access to the tower from the south and north walls each leading to Beiyuan Men and to the West Avenue. The second storey offers some breath-taking views of the surrounding area. The 24 drums in its north and south sides are symbolic of the 24 solar terms signifying an agricultural calendar, carefully formulated to be in par with the weather patterns of the area. Though no longer used as a weather predictor, it bears witness of the ancient people and their practices and creates a clear picture of a close knitted agrarian society.
The new attractions of the site include a new drum placed on the tower in the year 1996. This apparently is the biggest drum in China as of now. The colours of a vibrant and a powerful culture come alive with their musical performances that never fail to entertain the visitor. The perfect ending to your tour could be found at the adjacent Muslim Quarter of the place. Devouring delicious snacks of Shaanxi and relaxing in this serene atmosphere would almost always appeal to any visitor.
