Tragedy struck Greystone Mansion when its owner Edward Ned Doheny, Jr., son of a the famous oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny was found in his bedroom along with his secretary Hugh Plunket in a murder-suicide. His widow lived in the house with her children until 1955 after which she sold the property to Henry Crown who was going to demolish the building. Due to the sites historical significance however, the city of Beverly Hills put a stop to his plan and bought over the entire estate.
