A mansion with pizzazz, the Greystone Park and Mansion

Beverly Hills is a city known for its glamour, glitz and celebrity patrons. The city’s residents include CEOs, TV artists, actors, designers, models and the “who’s who” of Hollywood resulting in an extremely stylish and affluent population.

From amongst the landmarks of Beverly Hills the most famous ones are those associated with Hollywood, such as the Greystone Park and Mansion. Built in 1928, this luxurious Tudor-style house was constructed at a cost of USD 3 million, California’s most expensive house during that period. The gardens of this estate sprawl across 16 hectares of land and is known as the Greystone Park.

Tragedy struck Greystone Mansion when its owner Edward Ned Doheny, Jr., son of a the famous oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny was found in his bedroom along with his secretary Hugh Plunket in a murder-suicide. His widow lived in the house with her children until 1955 after which she sold the property to Henry Crown who was going to demolish the building. Due to the sites historical significance however, the city of Beverly Hills put a stop to his plan and bought over the entire estate.

Today it is constantly used as a filming set where famous box-office hits including Spider-Man, Rush Hour, The Social Network, X-Men and many other movies as well as dramas have been filmed. While the park is accessible to all free of cost, the mansion is used for hosting exclusive special events including the annual Hollywood Ball.
Other places of interest in Beverly Hills include the Beverly Gardens Park where an annual art fair under the name ‘Affairs in the garden’ is held. Also at the park is the Electric Fountain; showcasing a statue of a Native Indian kneeling in prayer, the changing colours of the fountain make it a unique site worth seeing. Rodeo Drive with its many shops and boutiques is another place worth visiting especially if you are interested in buying designer fashion.
