The Bahiravakanda Vihara is a Buddhist temple that is located on the peak of a mountain that overlooks the Kandy city in its entirety. It is a great place from which to take in some beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
1. Overlooking the City
The Bahiravakanda temple is situated in quite a unique position. From right in the middle of the plateau, it overlooks the entire city and as such, the milky white giant statue of the Buddha can be seen from all over the city.
2. Getting There
One of the simpler things to do in Kandy would be to head to the top of the mountain either by tuk-tuk or by walking if you are feeling a little more adventurous. From hotels the likes of Earl’s Regency, it would take roughly about 45 minutes to get to the peak.
3. The Temple
The temple is home to an 88 ft tall statue of the Buddha painted white. It shines in the bright noonday sun. From the foot of the Buddha, you can see the shape of the city.
4. Watching the Sun
It is a great way to watch the sunrise or the sunset over the hills that make up the hidden plateau across which the city of Kandy sprawls.
5. A Great Way to Start or End Your Kandy Trip
Tourists often make it the first or last point on their Kandy trip. You can see the places you want to go laid out like a living map below you.
