Belem is a municipality that is situated in the extreme south-west of the city. Its name is the shortened form of the Spanish word for Bethlehem and is a place that has quite a bit to offer.
Background to Belem
Belem has been occupied by people ever since the Paleolithic era, which means it has quite a bit of history. During the reign of King Alfonso III, Belem became a place of economic prosperity. Currently, it is renowned for its historical architecture and many 5 star hotels in Lisbon are situated nearby, such as Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa.
Belem Tower
This iconic fortification is a certified UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most recognised landmarks of Lisbon. It is a sight to behold and was built by King John II during the 15th century.
Tropical Botanical Garden
Initially built as a Colonial Garden by King Carlos I in 1906, this incredible work of landscaping evolved greatly to the present day. It currently boasts more than five hundred species of flora collected from all over the world.
Jeronimos Monastery
This iconic former-monastery was built during the very early 1500s and was occupied by monks associated with the fairly militaristic ‘Order of Christ’, who assisted sea-farers. It is one of the most incredible works of architecture Lisbon has to offer, and definitely worth a visit.
