Oman or the Sultanate of Oman, as it is officially called, lies to the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering the coast, and is an Arab country with much to offer guests visiting its lands. Its capital city of Muscat is a give of activity filled an amalgamation of things old and new; of modern traditions and architecture which live side by side with customs and structural designs of buildings that reflect the richness and longevity of Omani heritage.
Modern and chic-looking hotels are juxtaposed with bazaar’s that time seem to have forgotten. The passages of these souks are interwoven on either side with little stores selling all and sundry; from intricately decorated lamps and hookah pipes (these are water based pipes used to smoke shisha, a popular pastime in most Arabian regions) to a myriad of spices, pottery and modern electronics, these markets have it all. If the thought of getting lost among all these exotic wares excites you, then be sure to check out a bazaar such as the Muttrah Souq which operates in Muscat.
If shopping is not your cup of tea, and you want to get your blood singing with a little bit of excitement, then head out of Oman’s capital and towards the open desert, a sea of red dunes waiting to be explored by the adventurous tourist. Embark on a dune bashing adventure! Conquer the crimson waves via a 4×4, ascending up steep inclines to sandy peaks; and then plummeting down the other side in a spray of sand, a rush of wind and a bucket-load of adrenaline, your heart in your mouth, only to repeat the manoeuvre from scratch, when you spot the nest crest of sand looming before you, just daring you to be challenged. If you’re looking for a more laid back sort of adventure, head to the south and book a stay at one of the Salalah hotels such as the Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara, and many others. Salalah is a coastal city and also offers an unusual landscape with nature’s wonders. Here you’ll be able to head out into the wilds to discover the many stunning waterfalls stemming from the wadis.
