An enchanting port city in the Japanese island of Hokkaido, Otaru has much to explore during the day; equally enthralling, however, are the views at night from these key sites.
Otaru Canal
Amongst the city’s most popular attractions, the Otaru Canal is a lovely place for a stroll. Located a short drive from hotels like Grand Park Otaru, it transforms at night when the promenade is lit by oil lamps; you can also take a night cruise and enjoy a new perspective of the canal and its charming warehouses.
Mount Tenguyama
This mountain offers one of the best night views in Hokkaido and is not to be missed when in Otaru; accommodation can be found within easy reach of the Mt. Tengu Ropeway which will take you to the top; from here, you will be greeted by the sight of Otaru Port and Ishikari Bay which are truly bewitching.
Asahi Observation Deck
Situated near Otaru Station, the Asahi Observation Deck can be reached by taxi and is another place to go at night for mesmerising views; you can take in the panoramas of the city, harbour and coast. Plan your visit a bit early, so you can wander around the site’s nature trails and spot diverse birdlife too.
Kenashiyama Observation Deck
At a height of 470 metres, the Kenashiyama Observation Deck is an ideal spot to enjoy night-time panoramas of Ishikari Bay and Otaru. The daytime views are equally captivating and on a clear day, you can see up to the Mashike Mountains and which, according to some local superstition, can help with hair growth!
