Located on the Southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula is the sultanate of Oman. Recently named as one of the most developed and stable Arab nations in the world, Oman is an absolute monarchy. Although Oman’s economy is driven by its oil wells, it also has a thriving tourism industry owing to its many festive seasons & events, unique culture & traditions, and historic & leisure landmarks.
Oman is known for its ancient heritage, and even today there are many remnants of its rich history, five of which are Falaj Al Khatmayn, Falaj Al Muyassar, Falaj Daris, Falaj Al Malaki, and Falaj Al Jaylah; or better known as the Five Omani Falajs. These ancient structures are perfect examples of ancient ingenuity and engineering prowess and have also been declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2006.
A falaj is essentially a system of distribution and supply of water that was used in ancient times. Given the scarcity of water in the dry regions of Oman, these structures were of vital importance for the sustenance of the people and for their agricultural purposes. Almost all of the Five Omani Falajs were constructed over 2,000 years ago! What is truly remarkable about these falajs is the engineering and skill that was required to construct the mechanisms without modern technology.
A falaj comprises three essential segments; the ‘Aini’, the ‘Da’ndi’, and the ‘Ghaiyl’. The Aini is the mechanism that obtains water from either springs or rivers. The Da’ndi is a long underground tunnel like structure made of stone or clay which carries the water from the Aini to the people, and stretches for several miles. There are several outlets on the Da’ndi which spread to different regions. Finally, the Ghaiyl is a tap like structure attached to the opposite end of the Da’ndi, which allows people to use the water. These marvellous structures truly are an amazing symbol of ancient engineering, and warrant a visit by everyone who visits Oman.
