Few see the Middle East as a destination for art but travellers exploring the region will find plenty of art galleries. The Ghalya’s Museum of Modern Art is one of the region’s most popular art museums and is located in Oman. It was opened in 2011 with the blessings of sultan Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq bin Taimour Al Said. The museum is divided into several sections. The first is the Art Gallery which contains works from renowned local and international contemporary artists. Cultural functions, art workshops and exhibits are held here.
The second section of the museum aims to give visitors a glimpse into the lifestyles of Omani’s from an earlier period in time. Called the Old House, after a style of house built in the period between 1950 and 1975, the displays here are an exploration of local traditions, culture and customs. Among the exhibits are the Kitchen and Display Room, the Wedding, the Mother and Children’s Room, the Living Room and the Winter Room. Containing artefacts such as furniture and other knickknacks typically found in houses of this age, the Old House is an intriguing guide to Oman’s Past.
