If you ask a local about Kalametiya bird sanctuary, you will be surprised by the majority response, for the major portion of the locals have not even heard of Kalametiya bird sanctuary; and this is exactly why you should consider dropping by.
If you are a bird lover who wants leisure and privacy, there could hardly be anywhere else better qualified than Kalametiya sanctuary to give you what you want. Nestled between Tangalle and Hambantota, the sanctuary is within convenient proximity to most Tangalle hotels, and is even easy to reach through Hungama village. Although not many locals are familiar with the sanctuary, Kalametiya was established as a wildlife sanctuary as far back as in 1938. Keep in mind though, that you will be provided no guides when you roam the sanctuary; and here, you will not find facilities available at other sanctuaries. So the best option is to go there with an agent. If you stay at a hotel such as Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort in the area, you will be able to find an agent or source a tourist guide to help you navigate the sanctuary.
Kalametiya is home to a wide diversity of marine and bird life. Marine life is ever-present owing to the mangrove swamps, coastal lagoons, scrub jungles and the lush, grassy space. This marine-friendly area naturally invites a good variety of winter migrant birds from various parts of the globe. Among the birds you will find four species that are nationally declared as endangered. Besides, these, there are also 38 species of endangered reptiles that can be found here.
The sanctuary does not charge you for entrance, but if you wish to take a boat cruise, you will need to pay a sum, in exchange for which you will be given a boat. Only paddle boats are allowed so as not to disturb the marine and bird life with loud noises made by engine-driven boats. Don’t let this discourage you however as there is much adventure to be had here. Make sure to take your camera along when you visit in order to capture the birds you come across on film.
