Covering a land area of more than 90 hectares, Lake Gardens is Malaysia’s first and largest recreational park. Built during the British colonial era, Lake Gardens which is also known as Perdana Botanical Gardens was the brainchild of the 19th century British state treasurer Alfred Venning. The park is strategically located in the heart of Kuala Lampur.
Although Lake Gardens was originally created as a mere public recreational park, it was later developed into stunning botanical gardens. Today, these vast gardens are home to many native and foreign plants, shrubs and trees. It is referred as the ‘green lung’ of Kuala Lampur, one of the most sophisticated cities in the world. When you feel weary of exploring the sights and sounds of the busy metropolis, Lake Gardens is the perfect place to enjoy the much needed peace and quiet. There are also many accommodation options located just a few steps away from this peaceful retreat. For instance, the Aloft Kuala Lumpur Central is one of the best 4 Star Hotels in Kuala Lumpur located just minutes away from Lake Gardens.
Lake Gardens which is located adjoining the National Museum is a great place for everyone. The children’s playground at the north end of the park always becomes an instant favourite. The different sections of the park take its visitor to diverse settings and offer the chance to explore various plants and landscapes. The forest tree collection, fernarium, heliconia garden, waterfall and fish pond, unusual species collection, rare fruit trees collection, sunken garden, herb garden, orchid garden and deer park are some must see areas of Lake Gardens. Furthermore, an amphitheater and an ornamental waterfall were constructed during a recent renovation programme.
Free guided walks are conducted every Sunday from 8am – 10am throughout the park. Visitors can take the train or Rapid KL bus B112 to get to the gardens. At the park visitors can get on to a shuttle tram or simply rent a bicycle to explore the many wonders of these unique botanical gardens.
