Colombo is the bustling and activity packed capital city of Sri Lanka. However, this unassuming city also hides a wealth of relaxing spots to hang out at, if you want to take a break from the noise of the city and all of its activity.
The Mount Lavinia beach has long since been a hangout spot for those that love the sea and want to spend some quality time absorbing the sun and fresh sea breeze. The area is also home to many eateries that will offer you a quick bite to eat or a few refreshing cocktails, while you enjoy your time on on the sand. However, the beach does have the tendency to get crowded during the evenings, especially on Friday nights when most beach parties kick off, as well as on the weekends. However, for the most part, the afternoons find the beach quite secluded since the sun it at its hottest then.
Viharamahadevi Park is another spot right in the middle of Colombo, where you can take a leisurely stroll among the shaded canopy of the trees. There is also a children’s play area that could entertain little ones, which is handy for families with children that would like to visit the park. All around the park, there are many street food vendors selling delicious local sweet and spicy edibles, and there are also a few restaurants and coffee shops just a few minutes away.
The Beira Lake is a beautiful area that also incorporates, Gangaramaya, a beautiful architectural feat in the heart of Colombo. The sharp contrast of the tranquillity of this lake as opposed to the bustle of its surroundings is rather stunning. The lake is a quick drive away from many a Colombo city hotel such as the Cinnamon Red Colombo and others, where travellers could stay a few nights if they wish to experience more of what Colombo has to offer.
