Vietnam is a country steeped in, although it rarely dwells on the past. It is a progressive nation enjoying rapid development and widespread urbanisation while still remaining, in essence, completely South Asian. Mui Ne is a city located in the southern part of Vietnam. The region is famous for its scenic beauty and is a highly popular tourist attraction within the country. While the beaches are probably the most important attraction here, visitors should also try to visit the sand dunes located outside of the city. This area is terrific for having a picnic as well as for trying out a variety of activities such as dune bashing and sledding. The dunes are divided into two areas – the White Dunes and the Red Dunes (both regions are named after the colour of the sand found in each place).
Also referred to as Bau Trang (which means ‘White Lake’), the White Dunes are a lot bigger and more impressive than the Red Dunes. They are also harder to reach than the Red Dunes. However, the extra effort is worth it just to catch a glimpse of the Lotus Lake (Bau Ba), which is the largest body of water in the area and is named due to the profusion of lotuses decorating its surface. Taking a dip in the lake is a good way to cool off although one should be wary of reeds just below the surface. The Red Dunes are easier to access and, due to their smaller size, less difficult to hike across. It is roughly a forty-minute drive to the dunes from Nha Trang.
