The Museum of Transport & Technology in Auckland, New Zealand, is a museum that contains a large collection of military and civilian vehicles. It was established in 1960 by several local groups interested in different modes of transport, although the museum was only opened to the public in 1964. Since then, it has been staffed mostly by volunteers. However, as the museum’s popularity grew and more people recognised the importance of preserving the many exhibits on display, the museum has received more funding and the support of professionals. Boasting a vast collection of vehicles, the Museum of Transport & Technology is a very interesting place to visit. The airplane collection is probably the most interesting of the lot. There is a combination of civilian and military planes on display, with some models dating to the 1930s. Some of these aircrafts are very rare and certain models, like the Solent Mark IV Flying Boat, are found nowhere else on the planet.
The rail collection is another popular exhibit. Containing a series of jiggers, wagons, carriages and locomotives, it is bound to be fun even if one is not an ardent train fan. The museum offers rides on vintage diesel and steam locomotives on selected days. The ride is especially enjoyable and visitors should check the ride dates in advance before visiting. Visitors who enjoyed the train collection will also enjoy the tramway collection. Other collections of note include the bus collection, the military vehicle collection and the emergency services vehicle collection. Opening hours are between 10 am and 5 pm. Since it is a massive museum, it can take around two to three hours to explore everything. The transport museum is open every day. There is a small entrance fee, but the experience is definitely worth the price of admission.
