The magnificent Nakhl Fort has been acclaimed as one of the most picturesque forts in the state of Oman. This handsome creation is located atop an outcropping of rock with the craggy peaks of mountains forming a scenic backdrop.
The fort inherits an interesting history as different aspects of the construction date back to different historical periods. The earliest origins of the fortification stretch back to an era which pre-dates Islam, although it has been continually modified and added to over the subsequent centuries. The edifice was comprehensively rebuilt in the 17th century, whilst the towers and gateway which exist today were added in the following century. Finally the entire compound was extensively refurbished in 1990.
Entry to the fort is made through two gateways and impressive studded wooden doorways. On your left hand side you will see an intricately embellished archway through which the principal residential area is reached. On the opposite side you will see the Barzah, an expansive two storey construction which contained the living room of the compound. In the hot months of summer the occupants would spend much of their time in the upper storey’s airy comfort which was enhanced by the refreshing sea breezes.
An intriguing feature is the fort’s watchtower which includes apertures through which rifle barrels can be inserted. There are also larger openings from which boiling honey or date syrup could be poured on to aggressors below. Similarly the east tower of the fortress features similar apertures as well as a larger one for the fort’s cannon.
On the topmost floor of the fort you will see the living quarters of the occupants, including a guest room, living room and a number of bedrooms for women, boys and girls. The visitor will see some furnishings like antique wooden chests, crockery, rugs and even some very old antique beds. With all of these interesting features in a beautifully constructed fort this visitor attraction will be an enthralling place to visit for any traveller to the state of Oman.
