Sungai Perai is not known by the same name throughout its course. Only at the confluence of the Sungai Jarak and Sungai Air Hitam does it become known as Prai River. Located just a 12-minute drive away from Sky Residence Prai, one of the Penang serviced apartments in the region, this river meanders through Seberang Perai’s mangrove flatlands before flowing into the channel.
The Original Boundary
Sungai Perai was the original boundary between Province Wellesley and Kedah; this was when the land was handed over to the British during the 1800s.
Enabling Settlements…
Sungai Perai brims with fresh water, which has enabled settlements to appear on its picturesque banks – and this happened even before the establishment of Penang Island in 1786. As you follow the river upstream, you will start noticing the swamps slowly being replaced by scenic paddy fields.
Tributaries
The main river of the region, Sungai Perai, has many tributaries. Some are known as Prai River as well, while some simply don’t have names. The bigger ones have been named and these include Sungai To Sani, Sungai Lokan, and Sungai Kulim.
Bridges Around
There are several bridges across Sungai Perai, and the largest of them all is the Prai River Bridge. Some of the other bridges around include Jalan Sungai Dua Bridge, Tunku Abdul Rahman Bridge, and many other nameless crossings.
