The Royal Air Force of Oman first came into operation on the 1st of March 1959 under the guidance of the British who had a large influence in developing the military of Oman. It was originally known as the Sultanate of Muscat & Oman Air Force and got its present name only in 1990. The first aircrafts that made their home at this airbase were four Scottish Aviation Pioneer CC1’s, followed by the Strikemaster Mk82 and then the DHC-4 Caribou, Vickers Viscounts, the Hunters and the Sepecat Jaguars. Soon afterwards several other varieties followed all of which can be admired at the Mussanah air base today. Each jet has its own story to tell and has served the nation tirelessly through times of war. Today the collection has expanded to include a number of different types of F 16s and many other vehicles used during wartime.
