Be you on a holiday and looking to get some great deals on fashion and electronics or even on a quick business visit and in need of some souvenirs to take back home with you, Colombo has got you covered. The commercial capital of Sri Lanka, this cosmopolitan metropolis much like most Asian cities, has a high concentration of retail options, within easy reach of those staying at a city hotel. Colombo has something for everyone when it comes to shopping be it cash or credit card, though it’s good to have both!
For more modern shopping venues there is the Crescat Shopping Centre near the seaside locale known as Galle Face. You can find more upscale items here and while it doesn’t have a huge collection, it does provide some options for buying stylish clothing and fashion. A short drive from there will bring you to Liberty Plaza and the newly opened Liberty Arcade. Walking distance from Cinnamon Red Colombo, this well-known mall offers all sorts of goodies and has a plethora of mobile phone shops. Next door is the new addition Uptown Kandy, a huge department store offering loads of clothing items.
Of course, when it comes to fashion, the Odel Department Store in the Town Hall area is a quintessential place to visit, while stores like No Limit and Fashion Bug provide clothing for relatively reduced rates. When it comes to malls in Colombo, you have to visit Majestic City. This long-standing mall has probably one of the best ranges when it comes to items on offer be it designer perfumes, trendy fashion, electronics or mobile phones. There is a food court here along with a multiplex cinema too.
For shopping with a more local flavour, look to visit the area known as Pettah; this entire outdoor area is like an expansive market with a wide range of shops, stalls and even vendors on the pavements offering everything under the sun! Of course, as with most Asian street markets, the golden rule is bargain!
