The capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, is a frequently visited destination by tourists and businessmen alike. Having developed a sound reputation as a financial hub in South East Asia, Kuala Lumpur holds much allure for many travellers given its history of having hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1998 and the Formula One Grand Prix. Furthermore, the city is home to the tallest twin towers in the world, the famed Petronas Twin Towers. Given this interest, it is no surprise that hotels in Kuala Lumpur City have increased exponentially over the last few decades. This is greatly beneficial as it allows travellers to select accommodation that is conveniently located close to landmarks, attractions and business venues.
One such attraction is the Sultan Abdul Samad Building which is located less than four kilometres away from the City Centre, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral as well as Chinatown and Petaling Street. Located in front of the Independence Square, known by the locals as Dataran Merdeka, it is difficult to miss. The building was built during the 19th century and was used by the British during their occupation of the country. During the rule of Sultan Abdul Samad, the building was given its present name. Designed by A. C. Norman, R. A. J. Bidwell and A. B. Hubback, the Building is an example of the Indo-Saracenic Style. Formerly known simply as ‘Government Offices, it has hosted the Federal Court, the Court of Appeals and the High Court of Malaya and at present is used to house the offices of several ministries.
The Building is complete with a Clock tower which was refurbished in 2012 and gains national significance on both Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day when parades and march pasts are conducted against the backdrop of Merdeka Square and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Travellers visiting on National Day will be in for a treat as the building is lit up in celebration and makes for a spectacular sight. However, after refurbishment, the Building also has been equipped with LED lights that light the building up once night falls.
