The ancient city of Nizwa is the perfect destination for those looking for adventure and cultural discoveries in Oman and here are some key attractions that you should visit.
Nizwa Fort
Featuring a striking round tower that reaches a height of around 40 metres, the distinctive Nizwa Fort takes one back in time. Built during the period of the Yaruba dynasty’s first imam, Sultan Bin Saif Al Yaruba, the fort dates to the 17th century and features captivating artefacts and exhibits as well as stunning panoramas at the top.
The Green Mountain
Set amidst spellbinding vistas of canyons, falaj channels and fruit orchards, the Green Mountain provides many exhilarating escapades too. You can stay here at properties like Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort and enjoy via ferrata rock climbing, zip-lining and hiking to ancient villages; once done, indulge in some pampering at a resort spa in Oman that offers hammam rituals.
Nizwa Souq
Close to the previously mentioned fort, the Nizwa Souq with its age-old architecture lets you experience a traditional marketplace. Apart from soaking up the local culture, you can also buy some of the many items on offer that make for unique mementoes; these include carved daggers (khanjars), frankincense, woven baskets, silver jewellery and more.
Falaj Daris Park
Another great place to explore, Falaj Daris Park is amongst the historical falaj channels that are collectively part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This irrigation channel spans a length of nearly 8,000 metres and gives one a chance to see the nation’s traditional irrigation method, while the picturesque site provides a lovely setting for picnics too.
