The city of Muscat is a tranquil and peaceful one, filling all its visitors with a sense of old mystic beauty. The sunrise over the craggy volcanic mountains framed by mansions and forts with the blue sea lapping at its edges is a sight that is certainly worth seeing.
As an absolute Monarchy, Oman has been under the rule of Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said since 1970. Having been in power for over 40 years, the Sultan is a respected ruler.
Of his many palaces, the Al Alam Palace is one of the most beautiful. Built in 1972, the palace architecture is that of the contemporary Muslim world. The central building takes on the shape of a box, flanked on either end by two long wings. The overhanging roof is supported by towering aristocratic blue and gold columns. Polished marble gleams and catches visitors’ eyes wherever they may look. The area surrounding the palace is spacious and filled with a lush and colourful garden, with a pedestrian walk way sheltered by columns of trees.
Unfortunately visitors are only allowed as far as the wrought iron gates as the palace is an official residence of the Sultan although he does not reside in it. The palace is used for official functions and to receive various Heads of State such Queen Beatrix of Netherlands who visited Oman recently.
When viewed from the outside the palace is seemingly flanked on either end by the Jalali and Mirani Forts. These Forts together with the three watchtowers on the surrounding hills and the old city walls are 16th century edifices from the time of the Portuguese.
The Al Alam Palace makes for an interesting visit despite being allowed only up to the gates as visitors are immediately struck by a sense of majestic aura when looking at the palace. Additionally the visible architecture of the palace is exquisite, as is the workmanship. Sources confirm that the interior of the palace too is breathtaking in its luxuriousness.
For those looking for a Muscat hotel to stay in during their visit, consider an Oman beach resort. With its pampering luxury and plush amenities the Millennium Resort Mussanah is an ideal such choice.
